Kolkata:

Barely a month after the death of a student of IIT- Kharagpur allegedly due to medical negligence, gloom descended on the campus once again when a 22-year-old student committed suicide within the campus premises on Thursday.

K Ramananda Rao, a fourth-year chemical engineering student, was found hanging from the ceiling of his room - No 201, Block C of the Nehru Hall of Residence. The incident came to the notice of the administration when at 11.30 am the hostel sweeper knocked on his door to collect the laundry and received no response. His friends, too, had not seen him since morning.

Later in the day, the authorities grew suspicious and pushed open the door only to find him hanging from the ceiling.

According to the eyewitnesses, the door was not locked from inside and no suicide note was found from his room.

Rao was appearing for his semester examinations. Students close to him said they were not sure whether the academic pressure led him to commit suicide. Rao was the captain of the Volleyball team of the Nehru Hall.

Senior officials at the institute said prima facie it appeared to be a case of suicide and the body has been handed over to the police for postmortem. The institute has informed his family members and his father and elder brother have already left for the institute to collect his body.

Even his teachers are perplexed at the incident. Although they describe him as a below average student and said that he could not clear a number of subjects in the last semester, yet they say that it is by no means unique.
